The goal of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office is to become the finest law enforcement organization in the state of Louisiana. To accomplish this goal we must be selective in hiring, diligent in training and thoughtful in supervision.
New Hires
Like most organizations, newly hired employees start at entry-level positions. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, these positions are in corrections, patrol, communications, and clerical fields.
In order to be considered for employment, certain minimum requirements must be met. To be hired, applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high school or equivalent diploma, and must reside in Ascension Parish. Other factors which strongly influence the employment process are previous work experience, previous law enforcement experience, two years or more of college education, a clear driving record, no history of prior criminal activity, and a responsible credit history.
The applicant screening process is designed to identify applicants who possess the aptitude, character, and desire to pursue long-term careers as professional law enforcement officers.
If you have the personal qualities necessary to become a professional deputy, your interest in employment is welcome and appreciated.
The Application Process
The application process is divided into six phases, each of which must be successfully completed in order to move on to the next phase.
When an Application form is filled out and returned to the Sheriff’s Department it is filed in our personnel department. If the review of the application indicates that the applicant may meet our expectations of a candidate for employment, then the application package will be placed on an active applicant list.
When hiring is contemplated, applicants on the active applicant list will be contacted to undergo a Phase I - physical testing (for patrol or corrections positions) or a Phase II (for clerical or communications positions).
PHASE I:
This phase of the application process, applicants will be instructed to report to a specified location at a specified time to take a physical fitness test.
By state law, every enforcement-qualified deputy (this includes corrections and patrol) must pass a P.O.S.T. certified training program. Part of that training involves physical fitness testing. In order to ensure that all applicants are capable of passing the state mandated training, the same tests will be administered prior to employment as part of the application process.
The physical fitness test includes push-ups, sit-ups, and 1.5 mile run. The test is adjusted for age and sex. Included in this paragraph is an example of the physical requirements a male will be required to meet.
