SALT ~ Seniors and Lawmen Working Together

Seniors And Lawmen working Together (S.A.L.T.) as an organization provides an opportunity for groups to encourage the active participation of older residents in law enforcement services and to raise awareness regarding senior citizen concerns.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office provides staff support for this program.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office's TRIAD/S.A.L.T. is a program comprised of three branches: the Sheriff's Office, the Chief’s of Police in the parish, AARP and other concerned citizens. These entities come together in a united effort to protect and assist the elderly of our community.

This program is designed to promote the prevention of crime and to assist victims of crime through cooperative education, mutual awareness and participation by S.A.L.T.

The Purpose
  • TRIAD supports the involvement of law enforcement practitioners, as well as citizens of all ages, in the development, implementation and evaluation of acceptable solutions to reducing crime against the elderly.
  • TRIAD mobilizes community resources to continually ascertain the needs and concerns of older citizens and provides a mechanism for meeting those needs.
  • TRIAD enables law enforcement agencies to share resources that can effectively be utilized to develop and achieve a highly visible and effective means of identifying available programs or possible solutions to reducing the criminal victimization of the parish's elderly population.
  • TRIAD also fosters the development and maintenance of a local advisory panel to law enforcement called S.A.L.T. The panel's chief role is to determine the needs and existing resources within the parish that may be better utilized to plan effective strategies to combat crimes against the elderly. It also is charged with creating a network to develop volunteer support roles for senior citizens that wish to assist in planning for and alleviating some of the root causes of elderly victimization.
The Goals
  • To assist local law enforcement officials in planning for future needs of a rapidly growing, aging population.
  • To assist in the development of programs designed to educate seniors concerning certain facts and myths regarding victimization of the older population.
  • To improve the sensitivity of local law enforcement personnel, thereby assisting sheriff's deputies and other lawmen in becoming more effective in their interactions with elderly victims of crime.
  • To assist in reducing the fear of crime within targeted senior-populated neighborhoods through Ascension Parish.
  • To assist in the delivery of victim assistance for and by older persons. To expand the roles of senior volunteers within law enforcement agencies.
