The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit's sole purpose is to combat illegal drug use and drug dealing within our community. We especially target those who traffic in illegal drugs and those who make drugs available to our youth.
We are part of a task force with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and work closely with all state and local agencies around our community.
The drug problems in Ascension Parish are similar to those in the rest of the country. Recently the abuse of prescription drugs has become a major problem for residents of Ascension Parish. Several deaths have been attributed to this local problem: Prescription drugs are not a safe alternative to illicit drugs. The prescription drug problem is not only an adult problem, but has become prevalent in school age children as well. Parents with children prescribed medication for ADD and ADHD should monitor both the prescriptions and their children closely.
Methamphetamine (crank) is still a major concern to law enforcement in Ascension Parish. However, through a federal methamphetamine enforcement grant, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Offices have been able to combat the infiltration of this killer into our community. This drug is still a major problem in surrounding parishes and has been for several years. It is a powerful stimulant that is easily and inexpensively produced. It is widely becoming accepted as the drug of choice in many communities.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office now has 3 nationally certified meth lab disposal technicians.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit operates under the philosophy that you can and should demand a safe, non-violent, drug free community in which to live, work and raise your family. You do not have to tolerate drug dealers and drug users in your neighborhood. These criminals exist and thrive by betting that you won't become involved in their criminal enterprise.
Your Sheriff's Office is dedicated to doing its part in ridding your neighborhood of those who would deprive you of a feeling of safety and security. Once the street level dealer realizes that members of the community will no longer tolerate their criminal activities, they will move to escape the increased scrutiny.
