Motorcycle Unit

Commander
Lt. Bob Leblanc
In 1996 the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office developed a comprehensive Motorcycle unit to assist the patrol division with traffic enforcement, vehicle accident response, and traffic control problems.

Since its inception the motorcycle unit has expanded from 2 motorcycles to its current status of 10 full time officers.

The addition of the motorcycle to the patrol division of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office adds new dimensions to the department.

The motorcycle allows the officers to be highly visible in the community and is a great conversation starter with many young people.

Motorcycles have proven to be very cost effective and proficient control units for escort details, traffic control and community policing. Motorcycles are specifically well adapted to maneuvering in areas where a normal squad car is not.

All Ascension deputies complete a comprehensive 4 week course and are trained to national standards in the operation of the motorcycle in hazardous situations, crowded traffic conditions and adverse weather.

The motorcycle of choice for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is a Harley-Davidson Police Cruiser.

These units are made for demanding police operations by Harley-Davidson. This police two wheel cruiser is powered by a 1340cc Evolution engine and the body design allows for extra storage space for first aid equipment, the officer’s paperwork and necessary radio equipment.

Each motorcycle is equipped with heavy-duty brakes, police radio, siren and emergency lighting.

By the Spring of 2007 all motorcycles in the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office fleet will be equipped with onboard crime computers.
