Domestic Violence

The Domestic Violence Unit of the Family Services Division provides information, assistance, and locates resources for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assaults, and stalking. It provides a link between law enforcement and victim service agencies within our community. Assistance is given to victims that qualify for protective orders by helping complete the petition or referring to legal aid or an attorney for assistance. Follow ups are done on victims and court dispositions.

The Domestic Violence Unit can be reached at 225-621-8364 or by e-mail to DV Coordinator Dy. Pam Richardson or Lt. Kyle Hanna.

 Tips for Domestic Violence Victims

You are a victim of domestic violence and police officers are summoned to your home. You are possibly injured, embarrassed, in fear, and do not know what questions to ask for further assistance.

The following guidelines will assist in answering those difficult questions.
  1. Should you choose to remain in your present relationship, your safety is extremely important. Consider keeping an emergency bag packed with clothing, and extra money.
  2. Many batterers will batter again, unless held accountable. We recommend obtaining a temporary restraining order.
    • A restraining order is signed by a Judge and is a legal method of forcing the batter to stay away. The offender is served a copy by the Sheriff’s office and both you and the offender will be ordered into court for a hearing. The judge will hear the complaint and can invoke the restraining order for a period of 18 months. Victims should make family, friends, neighbors, and employers aware of the situation. Once a restraining order has been granted to you keep a copy with you at all times.
Home security:
Home security is very important and the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office suggests the following:
  1. Doors and windows should always be locked.
  2. If you have obtained a restraining order, it is wise to re-key your locks.
  3. If you arrive home and find that a window or door has been forced open or broken, DO NOT ENTER. Locate a telephone and call 911 and wait for a law enforcement officer to arrive.
  4. Install adequate outside lighting if possible. Be alert of any unusual packages or boxes.
  5. DO NOT disturb call 911
  6. A family dog is the least expensive, but most effective alarm system
  7. Tape emergency phone numbers on all telephones or program speed dials
  8. If possible, change your telephone number to a new unlisted number.
