REMEMBER ..... 9-1-1 should only be used for an emergency. An emergency is a life-threatening situation, crime in progress, or serious crime that has just occurred. Obviously there are other situations that require police response but are not 9-1-1 type calls; for those use our general dispatch number: 225-621-8300 extension 1.
When you call 9-1-1 for an emergency, it is important that you remain calm and are prepared to answer the dispatcher’s questions. If you are calling from a cellular phone, make sure to provide your correct address or exact location to the dispatcher.
The "Who," "What," "Where," and "When" of the situation you are reporting are extremely important. Sometimes these questions seem unnecessary, or may not make sense to you, but there are good reasons why they are asked. You can help by providing brief accurate answers. Patience will help us to process your call and get help to you as quickly as possible. Remember, until the responding emergency personnel arrive at the location of your emergency, you are the eyes, and ears for help. Our deputies, firefighters, and medical responders depend on callers to help keep them informed and safe. If possible, stay on the phone with the dispatcher or leave the phone line open so the dispatcher can relay important updated information to the responders.
When calling 9-1-1, it is important that you remain on the line, even if you dial in error. If you dial in error and the call is connected to our 9-1-1 center, the dispatcher is required to send police to the computer provided location of the caller to confirm that no emergency exists.
