CID ~ Criminal Investigation Division

The mission of the Criminal Investigation Division is to serve and protect the community through professional, impartial investigation of crimes and violent activity.

Our mission entails a working partnership with all of the diverse rural, residential and business communities of Ascension Parish. Our commitment is to serve everyone in Ascension Parish with respect and dignity.

Our mandate is to do so with honor, integrity, and pride. "Pride is a personal commitment; it is an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity."

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is committed to the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the preservation of peace, order and safety.

The detectives assigned to CID respond to problems and actively seek solutions through both traditional and innovative methods of police/citizen interaction.

The functions and activities of the Criminal Investigation Division include, but are not limited to:
  • Investigation of criminal cases
  • Polygraph examinations of police applicants
  • Crime scene processing and storage of evidence
  • Maintenance of criminal intelligence files
Evidence technicians assist detectives in evidence recovery at crime scenes. When processing a crime scene technicians document their actions, package all items of evidence collected, document the items, store the items and send packaged items of evidence to the crime lab for further analysis. Evidence technicians usually process crime scenes involving burglary, robbery, theft and criminal sexual assault. Evidence that they may discover at the scene included latent prints, hair, fibers, tool marks, blood splatters and instruments used in the commission of the crime.

The dramatic growth of computer usage in all facets of our society has required the Sheriff's Office to dedicate resources to high technology criminal investigations. Due to the nature of highly evolving technologies relative to computers, telecommunications, and the financial industry, criminal investigators conducting these types of crimes must be highly trained and extremely precise.

During the past two years, the Sheriff's Office has received numerous computers to process for evidence of criminal activity.

This is a slow and arduous task because of the need for care relative to the complex nature of the investigation, preservation of evidence, and potential liability for the loss of data and the cost of the computer.

Of the computers examined to date, several were seized for child pornography and some were seized pursuant to narcotics activities, homicide, forgery and other crimes.
